Ernest Brooke and his father, Edward, farmed on the Tully River in the 1880s. Edward Reginald Brooke managed Tyson's estates before taking up land of his own. The father and son also operated a sailing boat to take their produce to Cardwell for shipment south. The Brooke family sold their interests in 1911

The cairn is located 2 miles north of where Kennedy landed, on a reserve then named the Kennedy Memorial Park
