Silkwood School opened on 28th August, 1916, with eleven pupils registered. The first Head Teacher was Miss Hannah Hogan (from Mackay). By the end of 1916 there were 24 pupils on the roll

The school closed on 31st December 1974 and the building was used by the Queensland Main Roads Department as offices for a time

The Sisters of the Good Samaritan arrived in February 1928 and classes commenced in the church. The foundation stone for the school building photographed was laid in 1933 with lessons commencing here in April 1934
