Photo shows some of the official party at the unveiling of the Kennedy Memorial cairn at South Mission Beach. It was unveiled on 23 May 1948 as part of the celebrations for the centenary of Edmund Kennedy's exploration. The cairn is located 2 miles north of where Kennedy landed, on a reserve then named the Kennedy Memorial Park

William (Wilhelm) Peters was a carpenter by trade, hailing from Hamburg. He was one of the first party to land at Rockingham Bay to set up the new settlement in 1864 that became Cardwell. His son was the first white child born in the district; he was named George Cardwell Peters. William died on 17 June 1917, aged 81 years and was buried in Mareeba

William Boyle was instrumental in the building of the Lower Murray Provisional School and also taught there in the 1890s. He drew up the plans for the new Murray Upper School and taught there from 1904 to 1910 and also 1914 to 1924 (with a short break in 1922)
