Hand coloured photograph of the original Cardwell court and customs house, built between 1873 and 1874 on Victoria Street on the site where the police station currently stands. This double storey building was damaged by a cyclone in 1890 and eventually removed and replaced by a smaller building

Ernest Brooke and his father, Edward, farmed on the Tully River in the 1880s. Edward Reginald Brooke managed Tyson's estates before taking up land of his own. The father and son also operated a sailing boat to take their produce to Cardwell for shipment south. The Brooke family sold their interests in 1911

Isaac Henry was among the earliest pioneers along the Tully River. Entrepreneur James Tyson selected a large acreage stretching from the Tully to the Murray River. Isaac Henry, who married Tyson's niece, Barbara, secured a large portion on the north side of the river. The family remained in the area after Tyson abandoned his own project. Isaac served on the Cardwell Shire Council for a number of years between 1903 and 1917 including as Shire Chairman

Photograph of Freeman Lawrence, who came to Cardwell with his family by 1884. He selected the property "Murrigal" at Murray Upper by 1891 where he lived until selling the property to William Wade by 1905, and leaving the district. He was Chairman of Cardwell Divisional Board in 1901

Sepia photograph of James and Annie (née McClelland) Henry and their children. James was an older brother of Isaac Henry. Both brothers were early pioneers of the Tully River district. James arrived in Cardwell in 1889 but settled at 'Fernleigh' adjacent to Isaac's property 'Bellenden'

When Walter Scott died at the Valley of Lagoons in 1890 his family in England sent out a granite cross to mark his grave. The large monument could not be transported by this bullock team up the difficult Cardwell Range route and remained in the township

Sepia photograph of prominent pioneer of the Cardwell district, Johann Christian Hubinger, who arrived in Cardwell in 1869. He was one of the first members of the Cardwell Divisional Board appointed in 1884 and served on the Divisional Board and then the Cardwell Shire Council for over 22 years. He died in office as Chairman in 1908
