An old McCormick Deering T20 tractor which had tracks was used, and also hand tools including axes and cross-cut saws. Eventually the strip reached a length of 1000 yards

Sepia photograph of Corporal Hugh Ramsay (Rowdy) Butler who grew up in Murray Upper, enlisted in January 1916 and served in France in the First World War. He was killed in action in November 1916. His name appears on the Honour Roll in Cardwell and Butler Street, Tully was named after him

Black and white photograph of a crashed RAAF bomber, Hudson A16-162. During the battle of the Coral Sea this aircraft flew a search mission from Townsville off the coast but crashed on 5th May 1942 in the Hinchinbrook Channel near Goold Island. One of the crew, Sergeant James, died in the crash and was buried in the Tully Cemetery. The aircraft was towed to Cardwell for salvage and returned, in pieces, by road to RAAF Base Garbutt
