Photo shows the bungalow built by E.J. Banfield and his wife on Dunk Island. An ex-journalist, Banfield settled on Dunk in 1897. He was known as “The Beachcomber” and wrote several books about the island

It was finally completed in December 1924. The section from Innisfail to El Arish was completed on 18th December, 1922, and the El Arish to Feluga section was completed on 3rd December, 1923 and opened for public traffic
