During the Second World War a unit of the RAAF was based on Dunk Island: No.27 Radio Direction Finding Station. A radar station was erected on the island in October 1942 and disbanded in December 1945. Members of the Tully Cycle Club. This club was very strong in the early 1940s. Races were held from Tully to Cardwell and Tully to Innisfail although they were dirt roads at that time. They used interesting equipment for the era, including tubeless tyres
