Innisfail's first MaMu cultural and heritage exhibition was staged in the Johnstone Shire Hall on September 15-17, 2009. It was supported by nearly 2000 school students, as well as hundreds of local people. The exhibition was the coming together of the four MaMu clans - the Waribarra, Dulgubarra, Mandubarra and Bagibarra. It was based on the 2009 NAIDOC theme: "Honouring our elders, nurturing our youth", and we hope it may be considered a small contribution toward reconciliation. The exhibition showcased artworks, dancing, singing and historic artefacts. Local MaMu artists displayed individual and collective pieces and visitors particularly enjoyed tasting genuine rainforest tucker and petting live reptiles. A highlight was the input of the 115 MaMu children identified from 11 district schools. It was a delight for all to see them perform so professionally in front of their proud Elders. Clan members have described the exhibition as "fabulous" and "unreal", and many more have expressed a desire to stage similar projects in the future.
