General notes:
In 1848 Kennedy, second in command to surveyor general Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, set out on an expedition to travel via Rockingham Bay and traverse Cape York Peninsula along the east coast to its most northerly point to link with the recent discoveries of T.L. Mitchell and Ludwig Leichhardt. All but one of the expedition party died.
