William (Wilhelm) Peters was a carpenter by trade, hailing from Hamburg. He was one of the first party to land at Rockingham Bay to set up the new settlement in 1864 that became Cardwell. His son was the first white child born in the district; he was named George Cardwell Peters. William died on 17 June 1917, aged 81 years and was buried in Mareeba
