William Alcock Tully emigrated from Ireland to Tasmania in 1847. He worked as a surveyor and moved to Queensland in 1861. He was one of the first party to land at Rockingham Bay in 1864 to establish the new town of Cardwell. The Tully River was named after him, and the town of Tully was named after the river in 1924
